The S.D.R.C. Children and Youth Separation/Divorce Groups.
Divorce isn’t a one-time event that just goes away.
The issue of separation and divorce is so uncomfortable for children, that they usually do not talk about it with anyone outside the family; not even their friends who are also from divorced families. We have created a safe environment to allow kids to share their feelings, learn coping skills and build resilience that will help them through this traumatic time in their lives and into the future.
Jessie Gogan –Counselor Facilitator, has been working with youth and families for more than 20 years. During that time she has counseled as well as facilitated educational and support groups addressing issues such as self esteem, social skills, separation/divorce.
In the group children and youth will be given the opportunity to adapt to their new situation and develop a positive perspective on their changing reality and focus on moving forward.
Groups will offer a variety of venues
Open discussion, role-playing, creative writing, artwork, music, games/exercises, etc.
Changes in family, like all changes, impact our world of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Our groups look at the myriad of changes and resolve to create understanding and build confidence for the future.
Group members will have The Opportunity to explore and progress using his or her own strengths and talents.
Parents divorce for many reasons which are not a child’s responsibility. Group members can take part in activities to help dispel myths and beliefs regarding family separation.
There will be focus on building problem-solving skills, how to get out of the middle; avoid choosing sides, two homes/two lives. Role-plays, coping strategies, and much more.
