I, Heather Mullin, acquired a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Social Work from McGillUniversity (Montreal, Qc.).I have worked in the fields of mental health, substance use/abuse and addictions, child welfare, and within various school systems. In addition, I have worked as a clinical investigator assessing separated and divorced families as well as making recommendations to the courts regarding the best interest of children regarding custody and access.
Counseling entails a thorough exploration of presenting problems and concerns; therapeutic goals; emotional, mental, financial, and social functioning; and, developmental history and ones vision for the future.
I work collaboratively with clients so that they can gain a better understanding of their internal and interpersonal experiences (while considering various environmental contexts).A primary tenet of my counselling approach is based on my belief that each person's psychological experiences are unique despite similarities in presenting issues and/or personal background.I am committed to helping people express their feelings and concerns in a safe, non-judgmental, therapeutic space. Assessment is on going, designed to evaluate the nature and level of distress, and to recommend counseling options.
Separation/Divorce - Parenting In The Best Interest Of The Child/ren
Psycho-Educational Workshop (intake + 6 sessions)
With the right support, most parents can find a way to build a secure base for their child/ren after separation or divorce that is good for parents and vital for their children. What hurts children and their development the most is ongoing adult conflict. In turn, parents in conflict need support to sort it all out and, of course, what children need after their parents separate is exactly what they needed before: a secure emotional base.
I facilitate workshops (for adults) that are designed to identify and explore common issues and concerns that affect children during separation and divorce.During each session participants will be provided with notes regarding the specific topics being addresses. In addition, I will provide examples using various family formations, family dynamics and different situations that correspond with the sessions topics. Participants will also have an opportunity to engage in helpful discussions and exchange information.
